Hip pain is often felt in the groin, but can also appear in the thigh or knee. Causes include osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, previous injury or fracture, and inflammatory conditions.

Reasons to see a specialist

  • Pain with walking, putting on shoes, or climbing stairs
  • Stiffness or a limp that is getting worse
  • Night pain or pain at rest
  • Imaging that shows joint damage

In total hip replacement, the damaged ball and socket are replaced with artificial components. It is one option among several, and your specialist will explain whether it fits your condition, age, activity and general health.
